Spearheaded by the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA), the ICOMIA ASIA PROJECT is an initiative to identify and understand obstacles to growth in Asia (such as restriction on the permits and approvals for building marinas, duties and taxes and cross border immigration issues) by working with national and local industry and authorities in order to create recommendations on how to develop a friendly recreational boating environment in the region.
Subject to the creation of an efficient funding mechanism, Phase One of the Project will focus on the following nine countries: Brunei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Without being exhaustive, the Phase One Report will detail, where possible, the following information for each of the countries: national statistics, industry SWOT analysis, recreational marine infrastructure, manufacture, equipment, importers and dealers, repair facilities, marinas, boating clubs and mooring facilities, barriers to trade such as taxation and import/export requirements as well as registration and regulations.
Phase One has attracted several high profile Sponsors so far:
