This episode is hosted by Ben Taylor https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-taylor-digital-marine/ and sponsored by AkzoNobel https://www.akzonobel.com/en.
In the third episode of the ICOMIA podcast Ben is joined by ICOMIA’s Patrick Hemp to talk about one of his specialist areas, ISO Standards and their importance in the recreational boating industry.
Patrick starts off the interview by sharing his experience and background in the industry from sailing boats to boat design.
He then provides some details about his role at ICOMIA and the importance of ICOMIA.
The conversation then moves on to ISO Standards.
Patrick explains that ICOMIA financially and physically supports the work of ISO TC188 which is really a small craft technical committee. Around approximately 80 standards are applicable to small craft, all under continual review and evolution and the committee is made up of experts who volunteer their time and give back their technical expertise to the wider industry.
Ben then asks Patrick to explain the process of ISO compliance if you are a manufacturer in the industry. Patrick explains that there are different ways to do it and the process can sometimes be arduous, but there are national standards bodies monitoring and approving standards with ICOMIA sitting in an advisory role to try and ensure easy accessibility to all.
They then talk about the importance of sustainability in the recreational boating industry and how this is incorporated into Standards. Patrick explains about the importance of Lifecycle Assessments (LCAs) and how they will be used to help manufacturers to make good decisions around sustainability.
In closing they talk about the future and how ICOMIA can help assist the industry through changeable times.
