The ICOMIA Sustainability Committee has formed a Climate Change Working Group to progress the tasks arising from the Climate Change Policy paper and Letter of Declaration ICOMIA published earlier this year. The Boating Industry Association of Australia chaired the initial meeting of Working Group held in early November with membership from Gruppo Boero, Confindustria Nautica, APPR, ANEN and ICOMIA. The group discussed the policy paper and the fact boating should be a sustainable activity and that industry has a part to play in the overall response to climate change, and should be a part of the solution. ICOMIA aims at promoting awareness and encouraging people to be Climate Change literate, as well as focusing on solutions and opportunities to promote a sustainable boating industry. It was noted that marinas play an important role as they are at the land-water interface and provide opportunities in adaption and mitigation. There could be an opportunity to ask the industry to sign up to a sustainability statement with aspirations and targets at the next ICOMIA World Marinas Conference in 2023. The groups priority however is to develop actions to respond to all six commitments for ICOMIA listed in the policy paper. Consequently, the first meeting of the group agreed to three priority actions regarding climate change as follows: - Capture what industry has: i) achieved to date; ii) what we are doing now; and iii) what we will do in the future;
- Produce a series of factsheets to help drive Climate Change literacy and awareness across the ICOMIA membership and networks;
- Encourage ICOMIA Marine Industry Associations members to publish the ICOMIA Letter of Declaration on their websites, and to cascade this recommendation down through their memberships.
