Our marine industry association members expressed the importance of creating space for each one to share their experience. This is why we have scheduled a MIAs experience sharing meeting on 21st April at 11 am UK time.

This  meeting will provide all of us the opportunity to discuss the lack of income due to show cancellations and other important topics affecting us all.

The preliminary agenda includes:

  • Presentations by 3 MIAs on alternative income generation
  • Q&A session

2020 Quarterly Economic Statistics Report (Q1, 2, 3 & 4)

The latest Quarterly Economic Statistics report has just been published and includes data for the whole of 2020.

This report contains quarterly information on economic development, such as inflation rates, gross domestic product growth, car registrations, producer prices and consumer confidence, in 51 countries across the world.

New EU Monitoring Newsletter

As part of closer ties with ICOMIA, the European Boating Industry (EBI) has recently produced the first EU monitoring newsletter aiming to provide ICOMIA members with input from developments across key EU policy areas affecting the industry. 

The first edition covering the period of January - February, includes the following topics:

• Update on review of the Recreational Craft Directive
• Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU

Red Diesel

Following a public consultation within the United Kingdom, HM Revenue and Customs have confirmed they will maintain the entitlement to use red diesel beyond April 2022 for all commercial boat operating industries, including pleasure craft.

In Northern Ireland recreational boaters will not have the same entitlement and will no longer be able to use red diesel for propulsion purposes but are entitled to use it for heating, lighting and powering appliances.

Both British Marine and the RYA have worked hard to ensure the availability of fuel for recreational boaters whilst maintaining critical safety requirements.

EU Strategy for a Sustainable and Smart Mobility

The European Commission has been working on a strategy for a sustainable and smart mobility. The aim of this initiative is for all transport modes to become more sustainable, with green alternatives widely available and the right incentives put in place to drive the transition.

Milestones to be achieved by 2030:

  • At least 30 million zero-emission cars will be in operation on European roads
  • 100 European cities will be climate neutral
  • Zero-emission marine vessels will be market-ready
  • Scheduled collective travel for journeys under 500 km should be carbon neutral
  • Automated mobility will be deployed at large scale
  • High-speed rail traffic will double across Europe

International Breakfast Meeting

Organised by boot Düsseldorf and the European Boating Industry the sixth edition of the annual International Breakfast Meeting will move to a digital format. On 20
April, high-level panellists from business and politics will discuss the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on
the recreational boating industry, how the industry can recover and new trends and opportunities.

The full agenda has now been released with the final speaker confirmed - Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries.

Speaking at a member's event

ICOMIA’s Secretary General Udo Kleinitz attended the recent (virtual) British Marine Expo with an overview of the global market and ICOMIA’s resources for Exporters, such as the Statistics Book, economic statistics reports and tools for exporters. Key element in this contribution was the ICOMIA Distributors Guide, a step-by-step guide for companies interested in opening new markets. This guide, together with ICOMIA’s Distributors Database is a priceless tool for any business in the marine leisure sector looking at expanding their international reach.

We want to take this occasion to refresh this particular benefit for members: ICOMIA staff are available to speak at your events. In the current pandemic everything happens of course virtually and it is now easier than ever to get a contribution from one of our staff via a web-meeting. Also, for a post-pandemic period, it is expected that virtual contributions are more accepted in conferences, so please make use of this provision. ICOMIA has spoken or produced pre-recorded sessions for a variety of members over the last year (such as conferences from ANEN, the Association of Estonian Marine Industries, ACOBAR and METSTRADE Connect). We speak regularly at external events so want to make sure this equally is taken up within our membership. Our staff can produce information on resources and research produced by ICOMIA, as well as our experts on Environmental and Technical topics.

New Sustaining Members

ICOMIA is delighted to welcome CMP CHUGOKU Paints and De IJssel Coatings as Sustaining Members.


De IJssel Coatings produces unsaturated polyester gel coats, epoxy and polyurethane pigment pastes and a complete range of products for newbuilding, repair and maintenance of small yachts, boats and pleasure crafts. Their range of products includes paints and coatings for the protection of wood, corrosion preventing primers for steel and aluminium and osmosis repair systems for glass reinforced polyester.

CHUGOKU PAINTS from Heijningen, The Netherlands is a daughter company of Chugoku Marine Paints LTD. (CMP) from Tokyo, Japan. CMP distinguishes itself through the continuous developing of unique Antifouling products for Marine vessels and Yachts. Besides marine coatings, CMP also focusses on industrial coatings for bridges and other steel structures for onshore and offshore. CMP also produces and sells Yacht paints under the name SEAJET.
 
IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea

Nominations are now open for the 2021 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea, with a deadline of Thursday, 15 April.

New Green Tech Boat Show

Brand new for 2021, The Green Tech Boat Show will take place on 19 to 20 June at Queen Anne’s Battery, Plymouth, UK, showcasing various green technologies in boating. This will allow consumers to understand what the total offering could be, and how they can help the environment by investing in green technology today.

ICOMIA is currently working on a Sustainability Panel which will be streamed during the event.

The show is specifically designed for boat owners wishing to make the switch to greener options, and prospective owners who’d like to start their boating journey in the most environmentally friendly way possible.
